First Flight

The summer I was 9, I spent a week at my sister's in Stettler, one evening her husband and I went to Stettler airport as he was an aviation buff. There was a man there (John) puttering away on a Cessna 150, after a conversation with my brother-in-law a ride was offered, I was in the back of that little plane in a shot (back then, 150s had a space back there) and was told it was only a 2 man plane and I couldn't ride there. John seen the disappointment as I crawled out and told me to get in the front, he would give me a ride first. I remember being somewhat terrified in spite of his shallow turns and careful handling of the plane but by the time we were on final I was hooked. This year will be 40 years since I got my license and I have loved almost every minute of it but the thing I enjoy most is doing what John did that evening, giving first plane rides to the kids hanging on the airport fence. God bless you John, see you "up there" some day.
