Obituary for Norman Edward Swain

After a valiant fight against cancer, we are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Norman “Norm” Swain on June 4, 2015 at the age of 70 years. Fundamentally, Norm was a builder. He constructed and renovated his home through the 80s, a house initially built in 1936 and still standing strong today. Whenever possible Norm would hospitably open its rooms and provide shelter to family and friends alike. Norm also built an incredible career: starting as a roughneck in the oil patch he would eventually work overseas as a rig manager, an achievement which demonstrated his inspiring work ethic and thirst for adventure. Valuing and respecting the differences among people, Norm built many friendships. When times were tough he would never hesitate to lend support to a friend in need, and consistently proved to be generous and kind-hearted. Most importantly, Norm built an extraordinary family. He is survived by his son, Martin Swain, his daughter, Jennifer Swain, and his seven grandchildren, Jade, Conner, Stephanie, Shoney, Joshua, Tavia, and Heather. Norm is also survived by his sisters, Linda and Rosalie-anne, and their families. Norm is predeceased by his mother, father, and son, Daniel, and beloved cat, Beauty. Norm passed away surrounded by family, and a private Graveside Service took place June 8, 2015. If desired, Memorial Donations in Norm’s honor may be made directly to the Red Deer Hospice Society at www.reddeerhospice.ca. Arrangements in care of Ashley Paton, Funeral Director at Parkland Funeral Home and Crematorium.
