Dorothy Patricia Asmundson of Red Deer, Alberta, Passed away at The Red Deer Hospice on Monday, July 23, 2018 at the age of 86 years. Dorothy was born in Donalda, Alberta to Archibald and Rhoda Whamond on April 7, 1932, the fifth of seven children. She married Harold Asmundson on November 1953. In 1963 Harold and Dorothy established Mayfair IGA, better known as Downtown IGA, and bought a second store, Eastview IGA in 1970. Harold passed away on May 6, 1984. Dorothy continued to run the two grocery store, retiring in 1999. She was very dedicated to her staff, and she thought of them as a second family. Customer service was her top priority. She volunteered for various organizations such as The Red Deer Highland Games, The Christmas Bureau, and Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, just to name a few.She also volunteered for the government doing income tax for low income, seniors and immigrants. She was awarded The Mayor's Recognition Volunteer Award in 2017, and in June of this year, was recognized by the Governor General and was presented whit Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers. Dorothy is longingly remembered by her 2 daughters, Debbie (Don) Schroderus, Patty (Graham) Alfano or Red Deer, 5 grandchildren, Brent (Emily) Schroderus, Scott Schroderus, Kevin Alfano, Amy Alfano (Chris), Eric Alfano(Jessie), 3 great granddaughters, Erika and Drew Schroderus, Nyxis Alfano, 2 sisters, Lila Free pf Calgary, Rhoda (Larry) Parder of Red Deer, 1 brother, Roy (Joyce) Whamond of Parksville B.C. and other extended family members and close friends. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband Harold, siblings, Archie, May an David. A Celebration Of Life will be held at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 18 Selkirk Boulevard, Red Deer on Monday, July 30 at 11:00am with Pastor Don Hennig officiating. Interment will follow at the Red Deer Cemetery. Memorial Donations may be made to the Red Deer Christmas Bureau or Mount Calvary Lutheran Church Renovation Fund. Dorothy was an incredible woman, a role model, always giving and thinking of others. She was a woman of faith, and lived a long and wonderful life.
