Condolences

Condolence From: Janie Lawrence Cilo
Condolence: Dear Joy and family,

I was so sorry to read your dad's funeral notice. Occasionally I surf through the Advocate obituary section and saw it there. As well my cousin, Garry Lawrence, of Sylvan Lake sent a copy to me.
I remember your dad and mom from an early age. Both were amazingly happy people and enmeshed in the busy life of a large family. My father was always so pleased that your dad purchased "The Sloughs" and was doing so well with it.
On the rare occasion when I returned to Pine Lake your father was always delighted to see me and greeted me with his hallmark laughter. It was an amazing laugh not just because it was loud but because it was so genuine. I loved that, and I often anticipated hearing it if I saw him.
I am so sorry you have lost this bright shining star from your lives. I apologize that this note is so late in coming, but please note that my thoughts are with you all.

Fondly,
Janie Lawrence Cilo

Condolence: Sam Glover was an important figure in my formative years. Coming from a farm background, a visit to his ranch was always an exciting time. Although I spent most of my time as a small boy getting into mischief with Joy and Herb, it was Sam and my Aunt Terry that were the dominant figures.

Sam was a hardworking man who scratched a living out of the rocky soil north of Pine Lake. With eight children to feed, it is surprising how he kept his humor through the long hours of field work and animal care. It is easy to remember his broad smile with his bubbling laugh that lit the room as he told tales of life in the area.

As the years rolled by, I was more of a distant observer of the family, coming together for weddings and funerals. Sam did not seem to age like so many of his peers. His outward energy still glowed, despite some very difficult times.

When my own children were small, we stopped at Herb’s place just before Christmas. Sam herded the many grandchildren, including my own into the basement. He was a kid magnet in every way. As the children raced around he would grab them one at a time in a loving catch and release game. My children joined in as if this was an everyday occurrence.

The last time we spoke, I stopped at the farm, while he and Lil were still in residence. He took the time to tell stories of my long gone Aunt Terry. It was a special day with a special couple. I will miss him.

Condolence: A Pillar of our Community has departed

I have always admired and appreciated Sam's leadership skills. When I dreamed of having a rink built up by the school, I discussed my idea of a new area and paying for it by having all recreation grants come to this project; as well as fund raise money. Most of the group jumped at the idea but we had some opposition. Sam was a great leader. With Jack Christianson, John Perry Sr., and Dave Peters coming on side with Sam and myself, the motion passed to direct all recreation funds toward our project. The County gave us the land and our project was built for our children to enjoy. Sam was always there to better our community.

Sincerely,
Roberta Volker
